Registration of Marriage Contract
February 2009
After the wedding, my husband and I personally went to the Church to secure our marriage contract (which we and our sponsors signed during the wedding ceremony). The church assistants asked us to wait little so they can bring it to the Civil Registry Office for its official registration in the book of registry.
One copy was given to us by the church, one copy was kept in the church. Since we wanted to get assistance from the Civil Registrar on the NSO Registration of our Marriage Contract, we went direct to them. According to them, if we are in a hurry to register our document, the civil registrar will sign an official request form to the NSO (nearest to our town) so that this office will forward it to Manila for official recording. In turn, Manila office shall inform the NSO local branch if our document has been registered. They will give specific dates when to go to the NSO nearest to our town and apply for the issuance of a copy.
We applied for that request form from our civil registy office, forwarded our documents with necessary documentary stamp tax from the local office of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and it is ready to be forwarded to NSO offices. It took me three weeks to wait before I was able to go to the nearest NSO and apply for the issuance of our marriage contract. On that same day of application, I was able secure also new Certificate of Marriage (CEMAR), stating that I am married to this person, on this date, on this place, etc.
There are some fees to consider. For latest payments, visit the NSO website.
